Going in for the shake/kiss

Americans shake hands when they greet each other. Argentines kiss each other on one cheek. So what happens when two Americans are introduced in Argentina? The shake/kiss pose, where both parties partially extend one hand while inclining the upper half of their body forward. That way they can respond with either a handshake or a kiss as soon as they've judged which is expected. Until they do, they look pretty awkward.
